| Mini Bits The Miniature Bulldog was first developed in the late 1980's by experienced English Bulldog breeders. The motive and goal was improved health and reduced size. There was also improved behavior and obedience. The average life span is 8-12 years. Due to it's facial features it can have breathing problems and skin infections. Most Miniature Bulldogs cannot swim and are averse to hot weather so tend to do best in temperate climates or as indoor pets. The Miniature Bulldog is known for being affectionate, gentle, intelligent and fearless. These are very loyal dogs that quickly become part of the family. Their easy going and playful nature is in direct contrast to their fierce face. Bullies crave attention and tend to misbehave if ignored. They are always up for fun and games but also love a good snuggle and belly rub. The Miniature Bulldog is great with children. Though they tend to be cautious with strangers, they are well behaved and affectionate with an even disposition. The following are the distinct types of build for Miniature Bulldogs: Classic Traditional - are more heavily built, often with more wrinkles, the preferred beefy look at about 52-68lbs at 2 years. Frenchie Bits In the 19th century, lace makers of England began breeding a smaller bulldog as a lap pet. When they sought work in France, they brought their small bulldogs with them. Some of these miniature bulldogs made their way to Paris, where wealthy Americans on the Grand Tour of Europe saw them and began bringing them to the United States. The French Bulldog is very fond of people and loves to act as a clown, seeking all the attention they can get. They are a companion dog that needs lots of attention and love from it's owner. French Bulldogs are a compact, muscular dog, with a smooth coat, snub nose, and solid bone. Their physical appearance is characterized by "bat ears" that are wide at the base and rounded at the top. Their tails are naturally short, and are either straight or screwed. Their neck is thick with loose skin at the throat. Their forelegs are muscular, short, stout, straight and set wide apart. Their hind legs are strong and muscular as well, and longer than the forelegs, to elevate the loins above the shoulders. Under AKC standard weight is not to exceed 28 pounds. French Bulldogs do not require an excessive amount of grooming or exercising. Cleaning their ears, trimming their nails, and cleaning of their deep facial folds will help prevent problems. Most French Bulldogs cannot swim and should never be left unattended around water.
